California uses specific formulas for temporary support and guidelines for permanent support. The state is particularly generous to recipients — marriages of 10 or more years give the court permanent jurisdiction over alimony. California is a no-fault state.
Temporary support: 40% of payor net monthly income minus 50% of payee net monthly income. Permanent support considers the marital standard of living, each spouse's income and earning capacity, assets and debts, length of marriage, and the supported spouse's ability to become self-supporting.
For marriages under 10 years, support typically lasts about 50% of the marriage length. For marriages 10 or more years, the court retains indefinite jurisdiction and support may be permanent.
