With hard news relatively scarce on this Boxing Day, I turned—for my sins—to the opinion page of the New York Times. And there I found Paul Krugman’s Christmas Day column. His latest jeremiad was curiously entitled “America Is Not Yet Lost.” If this is the optimistic Krugman, I’d hate to see the glum one!

My headline reflects my pick for Krugman’s most atrocious line. The full sentence reads: “If American democracy survives this terrible episode, I vote that we make pink pussy hats the symbol of our delivery from evil.”

But beyond that line, Krugman’s column was a veritable cornucopia of condemnation of all things conservative/Republican.

Here, without commentary, are more of Krugman’s Greatest Hits of today:

  • Trump has been every bit as horrible as one might have expected.
  • Utterly unfit for office, morally and intellectually.
  • The Republican Party [is] composed entirely of cynical apparatchiks, willing to sell out every principle — and every shred of their own dignity — as long as their donors get big tax cuts.
  • Conservative media have given up even the pretense of doing real reporting, and become blatant organs of ruling-party propaganda.
  • The U.S. may yet become another Turkey or Hungary — a state that preserves the forms of democracy but has become an authoritarian regime in practice.
  • America as we know it is still in mortal danger.
  • Trump . . . is clearly a dictator wannabe.
  • Growing evidence that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia.
  • The G.O.P. seems to be irretrievably corrupt.
